Why Measure Methane and Ethane

Many portable gas detectors measure methane alone. Detecting methane, however, does not always reveal where the gas comes from. Methane can be released by natural gas systems as well as biological processes, making it difficult to determine whether a detected leak originates from pipeline infrastructure. How SELMA Smart Plus Works

As the beam passes through the gas, some of the light is absorbed by its molecules. A sensor then captures the reflected light, and by analyzing how much was absorbed, the system determines the gas concentration.
