An OGI camera is a device that visualizes invisible gas leaks using infrared imaging. It detects gas by capturing infrared radiation absorbed at specific wavelengths, displaying gas plumes as a visible contrast in the scene. This allows inspectors to identify gas leaks without direct contact with the source.
OGI cameras use an infrared detector combined with narrow band-pass spectral filters tuned to wavelengths where specific gases absorb infrared radiation. When gas passes in front of a warmer or cooler background, it absorbs part of the IR energy, creating a visible contrast that appears as a moving gas plume on the screen.
No. OGI cameras do not measure gas temperature. Gas has no stable emissivity and constantly mixes with the surrounding air. Temperature measurement in OGI cameras applies only to solid objects and surfaces, such as pipes, valves, tanks, and equipment.
OGI cameras detect gases that absorb infrared radiation within their spectral range. Typical examples include methane and other hydrocarbons, sulfur dioxide, ammonia, and refrigerant gases. The detectable gas list depends on the camera’s spectral filter design.
