Acoustic imaging and laser-based methane detection are powerful technologies on their own, but some inspections require both. Acoustic imaging can quickly locate a suspected leak from a distance, and laser detection can then confirm the presence of methane and measure its concentration. Combining these two methods in one instrument gives inspectors a practical way to locate a leak first and verify the gas without switching equipment. This is where Pergam’s CRY8125M package comes in.
CRY8125M is an intrinsically safe handheld acoustic imaging camera with a removable TDLAS methane detector module. The camera localizes pressurized gas and vacuum leaks from a distance, while the TDLAS module confirms methane presence and measures its concentration along the laser beam path. The camera estimates the leak rate and associated cost, giving inspectors a quantitative basis for assessing the scale and potential impact of a detected leak.

How CRY8125M Works

CRY8125M uses acoustic imaging to visualise gas leaks and TDLAS technology to detect methane and measure its concentration.

Acoustic Imaging

CRY8125М detects ultrasound produced by gas leaks, partial discharges and mechanical wear. Using a 200-channel microphone array and HyperVision algorithm, it accurately locates the source of the ultrasound while filtering out background noise. The device detects any gas type, measures leak rates, and estimates financial impact to support maintenance planning. It also finds and classifies partial discharges, identifies mechanical issues, and supports an external thermal imaging module for enhanced diagnostics.

Laser Methane Detection

The laser methane detector module of the CRY8125M utilizes TDLAS technology
TDLAS (Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy) technology uses a tunable diode laser for precise gas analysis. The laser emits a narrow beam of light at a specific wavelength that matches the absorption characteristics of the target gas. When this beam passes through the gas and reflects off a surface, part of the light is absorbed by gas molecules. A sensor captures the reflected beam, and the gas concentration is determined by measuring the reduction in light intensity.

Three-Step Inspection Workflow

Three simple steps for a complete leak inspection.
  • Step 1

    Locate

    Scan the asset from a safe distance. The acoustic image marks the leak on the live camera view and estimates the leak rate and cost.
  • Step 2

    Confirm

    Point the laser at the same spot. TDLAS measures CH₄ in ppm×m along the beam, distinguishing a methane release from ambient noise.
  • Step 3

    Report

    Photos, video and data are transferred via Wi-Fi or USB-C to the reporting software, which generates the inspection report offline.
